The Chair and Institute of Aerospace Systems (ILR) at RWTH Aachen University deals with the design and the operation of aircraft and spacecraft vehicles and also the further advancement of system components.
The objective is to increase the eco-efficiency of future transport vehicles.
Education at ILR covers major lectures in the fields of spacecraft design, aircraft design, the systems of aerospace vehicles as well as the overall air-transport system.
In further in-depth lectures the subjects helicopter design, aircraft conceptual design, and aircraft noise are teached. Integral lectures and laboratories in the field of delta-wing aerodynamics, tests in aircraft development, and current aspects in aerospace research complete the spectrum of education.
ILR's research focusses on the conceptual design of aircraft in combination with the integration of new technologies and their evaluation. Additionally, the sustainability of new configurations is analyzed on a temporal level by applying life-cycle-analyses and on a spatial level by integrating the vehicle into air-traffic and simulating the aircraft movement and activity. In the field of aerodynamic systems ILR research deals with the vortex dynamics of aircraft and spacecraft carriers with the associated acoustic phenomena.
