In many applications, numerical flow simulations play an important role, as they provide complete information about a flow field in the investigated area. Often combined with experimental investigations in the in-house test facilities, numerics at the institute is primarily used for the investigation of flow phenomena on wings and overall aircraft configurations.

The simulations are performed with the flow solver TAU developed at the German Aerospace Center. Tau is an unstructured finite volume solver based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) and includes various discretization schemes and turbulence models. Required computing capacities are provided by the high-performance computer CLAIX of the RWTH Aachen University.
