The steady growth of air traffic and the resulting environmental impact demand innovative approaches from the aviation industry for more ecological flying. Hybrid-electric propulsions, whose advantages include the motors' high efficiency and low noise, can make a significant contribution here as an alternative to combustion engines. These characteristics enable novel configurations and flight operation procedures. Today's air transportation is superior to ground-based transportation systems only over long distances. However, through the combined use of electric propulsion and noise-reducing measures, aircraft could provide an alternative to ground-based transportation systems for short regional distances and even within large cities.

In order to get a first overview of the local noise situation to be expected from the operation of air taxis, the ATEFA project aims at describing the cumulative noise level caused by air taxi scenarios and elaborating metrics for the corresponding assessment. For this purpose, together with our partners Kopter Germany and Munich Aeroacoustics, systems relevant for the German airspace are selected and technically and acoustically described. Subsequently, the sound footprint of individual fly-over events will be simulated and assembled into noise carpets based on exemplary traffic scenarios. The results will be evaluated with respect to psychoacoustic metrics and with a regard to future certification regulations.
