On 31.01.2023, the Institute of Aerospace Systems visited the excursion of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the European Transsonic Wind Tunnel (ETW) in Cologne with 30 students. The group was welcomed on site by manager Melanie von der Wiesche who gave a short overview on the institutes and research activities of the DLR. The visit to the European Transsonic Wind Tunnel then began immediately. Through a guided tour of the entire facility, the students were able to gain an exciting insight into the work at the ETW and answer questions in a joint exchange. Afterwards, other DLR institutes were visited, which presented their test benches for combustion chambers, fans, and compressors, as well as some wind tunnels. The latter are intended to, for example, measure influences on particles entering an atmosphere at high speed. Since all lecturers themselves conduct research at the facilities, the students were not only able to gain deep insights, but also to discuss various questions – and thereby also become aware of interesting internships and thesis topics.

We thank you very much for the exciting insights and are already looking forward to the next excursion!
